To deliver a sustainable health workforce that meets the health care needs of all Australians.
Health Workforce Australia (HWA) is a Commonwealth statutory authority that delivers a national, coordinated approach to health workforce reform. We were set up by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) to address workforce shortages and growing demands for health care arising from an ageing population, growth in chronic disease and increased community expectations.
HWA runs programs and provides advice to Australian Health Ministers and the health, training and education sectors on:
- boosting productivity of the health workforce and maximising its use, and
- improving distribution to ensure the health workforce is placed in areas where it is needed.
We are committed to working in collaboration with governments and non-government organisations across health and education sectors to address critical priorities in the planning, training and reform of Australia’s health workforce.
